George Frank Zounek November 22, 1925 – January 16, 2017

George Frank Zounek was born in New York City, NY on November 22, 1925 to Frank Zounek and Marie (Jirusova) Zounek. He had one older sister, Mildred, who died in a tragic car accident as a child. During his childhood, George helped his mother by working various jobs including managing/cleaning a tenement house, ushering at a movie theater, and cooking/serving at the Bohemian restaurant, which led to his excellent cooking skills!

Bernard John Goldsmith April 22, 1919 – February 18, 2017

Born in Oakland. John was an Eagle Scout, graduated from UC Berkeley where he was editor of the Blue and Gold and president of ATO fraternity, served as Captain in the Marine Corps during WWII, married Virginia Darling Hess, was a teacher and school principal, developed a ground-breaking gifted-children program, received a Masters from Stanford, raised a family in Redwood City, and enjoyed his last 42 years in Hollister.

Juana Trujillo Soto, 87, of Salinas, CA, entered eternal rest, on Friday, February 24, 2017. Mrs. Soto was the widow of Jose Carmen Soto (2007), mother of Eudulia "Lula" Ramirez of Gilroy, Fernando “Rambo” Soto (Ester) of Salinas, Francisco "Frank" Soto of Hollister, Maria Del Carmen Soto of Gilroy, Miguel "Mike" Soto (Beatrice) of Hollister, Jose Carmen Soto Jr. (Yvette) of Gilroy, Jesse Soto of San Martin, grandmother of Allegra, Analiza, Cassandra, Robert, Alexander, Erica, Adriana, Jaclyn, Miguel Jr., Steven, Vanessa, Julian, Adrian, Jose III, Melaya and great grandmother of Andres, Elias, Carter, Eliana, and Esteban Jr.

Vernon M. Schofield January 8, 1925 – February 21, 2017

Vernon (Vern) Schofield born January 8, 1925 in Gilroy and was the only son of Bruce and Florence Schofield. He was a lifelong resident of Gilroy where he passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at the age of 92. Vern proudly served in the US Navy as a Mailman 3rd Class from 1945-1947, and returned to Gilroy to eventually open South Valley Welding where he provided the South County with welding services in-house, on-site and in the fields.

Alice G. Velasco December 8, 1936 – March 7, 2017

A year ago on March 7, 2016, we celebrated the life and passing of Alice G. Velasco. Our angel of light. You are always in our thoughts and forever in our hearts. Polly Ann Boyd April 28, 1931 – February 24, 2017

Polly was born in Newton, Illinois on April 28th, 1931. She was married to Loren Boyd at the age of 16 on December 12, 1947. They moved their small family to Gilroy in 1965. She is preceded in death by her husband of 51 years Loren Boyd. Polly and Loren enjoyed traveling the U.S. in their motorhome. They were avid fishermen and always had a fish tale to tell.

Linda Anne Cobain May 17, 1959 – February 19, 2017

Raised in Milpitas and long-time resident of Morgan Hill, Linda (Haug) Cobain passed away Sunday morning, February 19th, at home with her family. Beloved spouse and mother of two sons, Linda succumbed to cancer after a year-long battle. A Memorial Service will be held for Linda on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at LIMA-CAMPAGNA-JOHNSON FUNERAL HOME, 17720 Monterey Street, Morgan Hill.

Passed away February 22, 2017 in Hollister, California at the age of 65. He was born in Hollister, California where he lived all of his life. He was employed by the Hollister Free Lance for most of his life, starting out as a newspaper carrier and currently was the circulation manager.

Laurence Laveroni October 30, 1926 – February 15, 2017

Larry F. Laveroni, 90, passed away on February 15, 2017, at a care facility in Bozeman, MT. Larry was born on October 30, 1926 in San Juan Bautista, CA, the third child of Joseph and Madeline Laveroni. In 1943 he left school at the age of 16 and enlisted in the United States Navy.
