The Gavilan College School Board had some big shoes to fill following the recent death of late trustee Mike Davenport, whose March 2 passing left a vacancy on the college’s seven-person school board.

It’s a guarantee now: the class of 2017 in Morgan Hill will be University of California and California State University ready. 

Out of 69,000 public schools examined across the nation, both Morgan Hill Unified School District and the Gilroy Unified School District were one of hundreds found to have high concentrations of suspicious test scores that indicate cheating, according to the results of a controversial study conducted and recently published by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC).  

Luis Alejo (D-Salinas) made a special appearance at Central High School Friday to speak to students. With about 100 or so students, Mayor Steve Tate, Morgan Hill Unified School District Superintendent Wes Smith and trustees Claudia Rossi and Ron Woolf, the assembly member spoke about his childhood and how he got to the state capitol. He said he was arrested at 16 while attending Watsonville High School and was put on juvenile probation. After another offense his senior year, the school told him with one more problem, he would be expelled. 

In lieu of an open seat on the Gavilan College Board of Trustees following the death of late trustee Mike Davenport, Gavilan is now soliciting nominations to fill the vacancy. 

On March 1, Britton Middle School social studies teacher George Karr grabbed his student Jeremy Garcia, 14, by his shirt, and told the student that he hated him. 

The first regular Board of Education meeting at Gavilan College since the death of Mike Davenport was weighted with emotion Tuesday night, when several trustees took a moment to remember their lost colleague before discussing how to fill his shoes.
