During a long, closed session School Board meeting Thursday night, trustees studied and discussed the proposed contract of Alan Nishino, who has been offered the job as district superintendent.

Current Superintendent Carolyn McKennan’s contract expires June 30.

“We continue to move forward in negotiations,” Board President Shellé Thomas said Friday. She said she could not comment further.

Rudi Gatti, of RJ Gatti Associates, hired to assist the board in the search for a new superintendent, represents the district in the negotiations.

Trustees will meet again Monday night for their regularly scheduled meeting.

A proposal to improve and protect the elementary music program, which in past years has been included on preliminary budget-cut lists, will be before trustees.

Another issue trustees will consider Monday night is the scheduling and advisory periods at Sobrato High. Principal Rich Knapp and members of his staff will present their proposal to the board.

The staff wants to bring block scheduling to Sobrato next year, and “the entire staff became our block scheduling committee,” according to PE teacher Carmen Villegas. Through consensus procedure, the staff as a whole determines if all members are “on board” with the decision.

“We use a thumb method: thumbs up, thumbs sideways or thumbs down” said social studies teacher Teresa Sage. “If there is one thumb down, if everyone’s thumb isn’t sideways or up, we stop. We go no further with the idea.”

There is more work to be done, the teachers say, but they will be presenting their ideas, research and work to date to trustees for discussion.

Trustees will also hear the monthly cost and schedule status report on Sobrato and an update on work for the upcoming fiscal year’s budget.

The Morgan Hill School Board will hold its regular meeting at 6pm on Monday at the District Office, 15600 Concord Circle. Details: 201-6000.
