The new Morgan Hill School Board went into action Monday night, with its new president, Shellé Thomas at the helm.
The unanimous votes electing Thomas as president and Mike Hickey as vice president were the first actions taken by the new board. Three trustees elected in November – Kathy Sullivan, Peter Mandel and Julia Hover-Smoot – were sworn in at the beginning of Monday’s meeting, along with Trustee Don Moody, appointed in October to fill the final two years of former Trustee Tom Kinoshita’s term.
Former trustees Del Foster and Jan Masuda, elected in 1996, and former Board President George Panos, in 2000, decided not to run for re-election.
Thomas served as vice president for the past year.
“It is my honor to nominate Shellé Thomas,” Hickey said.
Thomas nominated Hickey to serve as her vice-president.
Unlike in Gilroy, where Board of Education trustees elected newly elected Trustee Pat Mitgaard, as vice president after the nomination by President Rhonda Bress of Trustee Tom Bundros failed to receive a second, Morgan Hill’s trustees elected Thomas and Hickey unanimously.
Hover-Smoot volunteered to serve as the board’s representative to the Santa Clara County Committee on School District Organization. Trustees were presented with a list of trustee obligations, including liaisons with district schools and positions on district, county and city committees. Trustees will inform district staff of their preferences, Thomas said Monday, and a list of positions will be created.
