Goals and lots of them will be the order of the day when 86 of the finest Division I teams from Northern and Southern California converge on the Morgan Hill Soccer Complex this weekend for the third annual Morgan Hill/Gilroy Cup hosted by Orchard Valley Youth Soccer League.

The event will run Aug. 7-8.

“I am especially excited about this year’s tournament,” OVYSL President and Cup Director Jack Salvemini. “For the first time, we will be hosting teams from the Los Angeles and San Diego areas, which are considered out-of-state.

“In addition, this is the largest tournament we have ever hosted and we will have lots of vendors which should provide quite a carnival atmosphere that the younger teams in particular will enjoy.”

The tournament will host Under-11, 12, 13, 15 and 16 girls’ teams and U11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 19 boys’ teams.

Games start at 8 a.m. both days.

Although this is only the third Morgan Hill/Gilroy Cup, the OVYSL has played host to many visiting teams for the preceding 10 years, sponsoring the Run and Gun and Nothing But Net tournaments,

When previous tournament directors Ron Morrell and Mike Salvemini stepped away, the tournaments were combined to become the current Cup event.

Current OVYSL President Salvemini, who was tournament director for many years of the Sunnyvale United Invitational Soccer Tournament, has formed a tournament committee that includes Don Mott, who has served as Assistant Director for the past two years, Tony Rodrigues, who is in charge of officials for the 86 games to be played on Saturday and the 48-plus games to be played on Sunday, Cathy Cunningham and Donna Mott, who handle all the vendors and get their entire families involved to cover all the logistics, Ricardo Martinez, who acts as coordinator, Lisa Seibert, who is the referee paymaster, Chris Cifelli, the game scheduler, and Andrea Salvemini, who handles credentials and all the administrative duties.

In addition, Jack Salvemini and his crew will be assisted by Kathi Killion and Joyce Pineda from the state office (CYSA) in Pleasanton, as well as PAD (Protest, Appeals and Discipline) Committee.

“It’s a real plus having these two ladies on site,” Salvemini said. “Between the two of them, there is not a CYSA rule or policy they can’t quote and their assistance in explaining them as the usual tournament questions arise is invaluable.”
