Local FFA chapter attends prestigious nat’l event

Can you imagine a sea of 55,000 students and guests meeting together to learn about agricultural jobs, compete in Career Development Events, listen in on keynote speakers, and sculpt the future of the National FFA Organization?  Well it happened in Indianapolis, Ind. at the 85th Annual National FFA Convention.

With the recent release of the Academic Performance Index scores for the Morgan Hill Unified School District, parents and community advocates have taken it upon themselves to see what they can do to help improve the scores. However, the superintendent is doubtful that one organization is actually looking to improve the schools.

Central High honored for jump in API scores

The students, teachers, and administration at Morgan Hill’s Central Continuation High School on Oct. 30 celebrated a major academic achievement with a school barbecue put on by the Morgan Hill Kiwanis Club.

First place for Emerald Regime Marching Band

The 57 member Emerald Regime Marching Band and Color Guard took first place with a score of 67.05 in AA class at thier first competition of the season last Saturday night at the Valley Christian Quest Classic. Performing the show, Sirens, under the direction of drum major, Yasmin Deosaran, and featuring flute soloist Rachel Harris, the Emerald Regime won three of five while competing against five other schools in their class. With tenacity and more than 200 hours of practice, the Emerald Regime is prepared and excited for their next competition on Oct. 27 at the Gilroy Classic at Gilroy High School.

San Martin 4-H shows off their knowledge and skills

National 4-H week was earlier this month, and 4-Hers from kindergarten up to high school seniors will be observing the occasion. National 4-H week is an opportunity for 4-Hers to don the traditional white and green uniform to represent their organization, and to spread the word about 4-H.

Parents upset over restructuring aide job for autism students

The Morgan Hill Unified School District school board voted unanimously Tuesday night to restructure all aides within the district into a new position. This new position, called a paraprofessional, would see a 5-percent salary increase compared to the current instructional aide position, but at the expense of the paraeducators, who will see a 30-percent cut in their salary.

Schools closed Oct. 8 for furlough

All schools within Morgan Hill Unified School District will be closed Monday, Oct. 8 due to a furlough for all staff. It’s the only furlough day so far scheduled this year.
