Dean Raymond was kind of hoping his prediction on where his star sophomore Cobbie Jones would finish at the State Cross-Country Finals would prove to be a conservative estimate. As it turned out, the Live Oak High cross-country coach was right on the money.
In her second trip to the state finals in as many years, Jones came in 50th in 19:18, finishing in the top 25 percent of the 201 runners at the meet in Fresno last weekend.
“She ran about where I thought she would,” Raymond said. “She did pretty well considering. Remember, this is a sophomore running against the best girls in the state.”
Raymond said Jones started out well, then slowed toward the end of the 3.1-mile race.
The distance didn’t help the speedy San Martin resident, who is better at shorter distances, Raymond said.
“She’s a half-miler and a lot of these girls are milers and two-milers,” he said.
Jones, who had only run a 3.1-mile course once earlier this season — at the Stanford Invitational, impr-oved her time over the distance by 24 seconds.
She ran a 19:42 at Stanford in September.
And, the underclassman has two more years to take more shots at the state meet.
In fact, Jones’ cross-country season isn’t quite over yet. She is planning on competing at the Mount Sac Invitational this weekend.
