Our community has an active Interfaith Clergy Alliance, which includes clergy from a number of the faith communities in Morgan Hill, San Martin and Gilroy. We all seek to build up a community of respect and love for neighbors in the community in which we live together.

On Friday, March 21, there was a political demonstration on the Burnett Avenue overpass on Highway 101, in north Morgan Hill. At that same time and place a Nazi flag with a swastika symbol was hung from the overpass.

This flag and symbol represents hatred and death, historically targeting a number of people and groups, particularly Jews, and also including LGBTQ+ people, disabled people and those who speak and act in resistance to fascism. The Nazi flag, therefore, represents hate speech, whether displayed on public property or as an intrusion onto private property.

We stand against all acts of hate. Our sacred texts urge us to treat all people with dignity and respect. Moreover, whether in public or in private, countering someone with an opposing view with any kind of symbol or speech that shows disrespect does nothing to bring the change we need. And, symbols or speech meant to terrify another person or group, such as a Nazi flag, are always unacceptable.

Therefore, we ask the entire community to safeguard each other’s dignity and safety. We pray all agree not to allow either overt or covert attacks, in speech or in action, on anyone who lives here.

When opposing one another’s viewpoints, we can disagree vigorously on topics without attacking the personhood of another person or group. Representing communities whose ministries are dedicated to the transformational love of God in the world, we invite you all into hope and prayer, contemplation and love toward neighbors for the sake of this community we share.
