Dear Editor,

Greetings all. I was having coffee, downtown, a few weeks ago, when I ran into an old friend. She does volunteer work with senior citizens in Morgan Hill and expressed some frustration regarding the use of rooms in the new Community Center.

It seems she facilitates bridge meetings for seniors, and wanted to use a room at the new Community Center. I was surprised when she told me the Center would charge her $170 for the room. My cost may be off, but it was somewhere near that amount. She was told this would be the charge, even though they had many empty rooms on the days she wished to bring the seniors over.

I am having difficulty understanding why a community center would charge local senior citizen groups for the use of a room. I feel the operative word here is “community.”

It just doesn’t seem quite right to me that a charge should be levied on local senior groups. I can see renting the rooms to businesses, churches and other entities, but I feel local senior programs should not have to pay for the use of a room at a Community Center.

Just one guy’s opinion.
