themselves as the ones to beat, again, in the Tri-County Athletic
League ranks. The Acorn girls and boys both coasted to impressive
victories in TCAL action against visiting Carmel on Wednesday.
It didn’t take long for the Live Oak High water polo teams to establish themselves as the ones to beat, again, in the Tri-County Athletic League ranks.

For the Live Oak girls, Amanda Cretcher posted four goals and Ronni Gautschi added two in a 15-2 rout of the Padres in Wednesday’s first match.
“It’s good to play a game like that because everybody gets to play,” Live Oak coach Bryan Traverso said of being able to empty his bench in the match. “It was a good home league opener. (The Acorns) came out really intesne and played hard.”
In fact, eight different Acorn girls scored in the victory, including Ashley Vater, Katie Robinson, Laura Melroy, Breanna Stevenson and Monica Cline.
Goalie Danielle Maldonado chalked up seven saves.
Live Oak improved to 5-1 overall, 2-0 in league.
After a 14-2 victory over Notre Dame of Salinas in their league opener earlier this season, the Acorn girls have now outscored their league opponents 29-4.
Meanwhile, the Live Oak boys team nearly equaled that feat in one league match, its TCAL opener against the overmatched Padres.
The Acorns sprinted to a 6-0 lead after one period behind the dominant play of senior Ryan Gautschi, who tallied five of his match-high eight goals in the opening stanza, and never let up en route to a 23-4 victory.
We didn’t run up the score but we didn’t get into sloppy execution, either,” Live Oak coach mack haines said.
Live Oak took a 14-2 lead into halftime. Corey Robinson added four goals for the Acorns, while Justin Short and Kyle Fast added three each, Cameron Peachey had two, and Steve Sendejas tallied one.
The Acorn boys play at the prestigious Menlo Tournament this weekend.
LO cross-country
Sednior Billy Wong and junior Cobbie Jones both won the individual races in the Live Oak High boys and girls cross-country teams’ TCAL opener against host Hollister-San Benito and Palma/Notre Dame on Monday. Wong won the boys race in 17:54, while Jones turned in a 20:54 for the victory in the girls race. Acorn teammate Lisa Herrera finished second in the girls race. Overall, the Live Oak boys took second in the three-team competition, trailing the first-place Haybalers. Jesus Atanacio took seventh and Jonathan Kamei was eighth. But the Live Oak girls were forced to forfeit because they didn’t have enough runners.
LO field hockey
Live Oak High’s field hockey team downed visiting Del Mar 4-1 in its Blossom Valley Athletic League opener on Friday. Eileen Grove scored in the first period, and Sarah Goodere, Paris Rowan and Grove all scored in the second period to break a 1-1 tie and provide the winning margin.
Sobrato volleyball
The Lady Bulldog junior varsity boosted its record over .500 with its third straight victory, beating Santa Teresa on Tuesday and Yerba Buena on Thursday in a pair of road wins this week.
In Tuesday’s win, Sobrato downed the Saints 25-12, 25-16 behind strong play from Nicole Simoneau, who served for several long scoring runs, and Cheyenne Hambey.
On Thursday, the Bulldogs skipped past YB 25-14, 27-25 behind the passing and attacks of janie Aylard and the serving of Amanda Ramirez.
