Senior Matt Edgar scored the lone Acorn goal off an assist from junior Chase Norman as the Live Oak High hockey team dropped a 9-1 decision to defending Division I champion Pioneer on Friday.
Although the Live Oak team was unable to make headway against a strong Pioneer squad, the Acorns gave it their all and played together stronger this week.
Senior goalie Michael Anvari made several fine saves in the net and the defense stayed busy.
But Pioneer was consistent with its precision shooting.
As veterans of Division I play, Pioneer demonstrated why it is the defending champion.
Meanwhile, Live Oak was missing sophomore Brian Costello, who is out with an injury.
But the Acorns did have sophomore Conner Williamson, who returned to action from injury.
After experiencing plenty of success in lower divisions, winning several titles, Live Oak has climbed into Division I this season, and is playing against the top six high schools in the league.
There are a total of 36 teams in five divisions competing in hockey in the area.
Live Oak will play sixth-place Piedmont on Friday.
