A special election will be held in San Jose on Tuesday, March 4. Voters will be asked to decide on Measure A, the Airport Security and Traffic Relief Act.

The citywide election will involve 308 precincts and more than 357,000 voters or about half of the registered voters in Santa Clara County. Sample ballots and Voter Information Pamphlets will be mailed to voters beginning in late January. Only San Jose residents will vote for this measure.

The measure requires a majority vote in order to pass and will read as follows:

“To improve airport security, convenience, relieve traffic, and reduce construction costs, shall the City be authorized to add space for federally required security measures improved passenger facilities, and nine new gates, once Highway 87, a full interchange at Coleman Avenue and Highway 880, the airport street system are within three years of completion, and City Council identifies funding to connect airport with BART or light rail, without raising taxes?”

Proponents of the measure say it would provide room for the new baggage screening machines required by the federal airport security act and meet traffic improvements without raising taxes. The argument against says the measure drops the requirement to connect light rail with the airport and spends unnecessary money on improvements. Both arguments can be found by clicking on ‘Elections’ at www.sccvote.org

The sample ballot contains information about Measure A ,arguments for and against, the location of the polling place and the Absentee Voter Ballot Application.

Residents have until Monday, Feb. 3, to register but voters who register by that date will not be mailed a sample ballot. Those voters will be mailed a letter notifying them of their polling place and location.

Voter registration forms are available and may be obtained at public places such as: libraries, post offices, city halls, fire stations, and most county offices. Voter registration forms are also available on the Registrar of Voters web site: www.sccvote.org or the Secretary of State’s web site: www.ss.ca.gov

The registration forms must be signed, dated and received or postmarked by no later than Monday, Feb. 3, to receive a sample ballot or Tuesday, Feb. 18, the last day to register and be eligible to vote.
