Live Oak hosted Bay Rugby Conference divisional foe De La Salle Saturday at Live Oak High School and lost 54-7. It was the first time Live Oak played a varsity rugby match against the East Bay athletic powerhouse.

The Spartans, featuring two under-19 national team members, came out strong dominating loose play with punishing mauls and forward charges off rucks on their way to a 32-7 halftime advantage. Live Oak’s lone score came from a 40-yard burst by senior lock Mike McHenry. The conversion was made by sophomore wing Alex Muhn.

The Acorns had several chances in the second half, putting together several multi-phase possessions as well as putting pressure on the Spartan defenders. As the game wore on, De La Salle showed why it is a favorite to win the Bay Conference Gold Division as the Spartans added five second-half scores and a conversion to win.

Live Oak continues league play this Saturday against San Francisco – Golden Gate at home. Game times are at 1pm and 2:45pm.

JV: In the junior varsity match, Live Oak dropped a 26-12 decision to De La Salle. Live Oak’s scoring came on tries by sophomore wing Jeff Blean and junior prop Nick Sialaris and a conversion by Alex Muhn.
