Live Oak will compete in the league trials Wednesday at San Benito High beginning at 1:45 p.m. for field events and 2:25 for running events. The meet was originally supposed to be hosted by Live Oak, but had to be moved because the track was not finished yet.

The top nine competitors in each event move on to the league finals on Saturday at Hartnell College in Salinas. The field events start at 10 a.m. and the running begins at 10:30 a.m. From there, the top three go on to the Central Coast Section meet.

“Most of the people are peaking at the right time of the year,” said Live Oak coach Dean Raymond. “Next round begins the eliminations. Some events hopefully two or three will be able to go on. This is what they trained all season for the opportunity to compete.”

Many of the frosh soph boys joined the varsity squad for the meet against Gilroy.

Although Gilroy won four field events, the Live Oak varsity boys (2-3) came away with strong runs in the races and won 73-47.

Jason Alcarez won the mile and half mile races. Alcarez also placed second in the long jump. In only his second varsity meet, Brandon Powell took first in both hurdles. Daniel Martinez picked up second-place finishes in the in both hurdles behind Powell.

Kris Mott placed first in the 400 meter and second in the 800 meter. Noel Mayor won the 100 meter and came in third in the triple jump and the long jump. Jesus Atanacio moved up to varsity and placed second in the mile, just missing his PR with a time of 5:03.

Billy Wong won the two-mile race and finished third in the mile. Freshman Mark Curtis, who has competed for the frosh/soph team all year, finished third in the 400 to complete the sweep and first in pole vault. Ryan Anderson placed second in the disc and shot put. Ashkaun Chakamian won high jump with a high PR of 5’10”.

The varsity girls won 65-42.

Freshmen Lisa Herrera and Yesnia Miranda had a strong performance on the track, running their first varsity race.

Herrera placed first in the mile and third in the mile, an Miranda was second in the mile and second in the half mile. Heather Molyneaux placed first in the 100 and 200 meter sprints.

Nichole Weatherford, running her last race as a senior, won the the 400 and placed second in the 200. Rachel Hart placed first in the 100 hurdles and second in the 100 meter.

Leanne Lopez won the the 300 hurdles, came in second in the 100 hurdles and took third in the triple jump. Ashley Trask was second in the long and triple jumps and third in the 400. Catriona Adam was third in the 100 and 200 races.

The boys frosh team (3-2) won 67-60 in closest match of the day with several guys moved up to varsity.

Brent Hatakeyama won the mile with a PR of 5:18. He was third in half mile and second in triple and long jump. Justin Cates was a triple winner, taking the 400, 800 and pole vault. Kent Wu was anther triple winner, claiming the 100, triple jump and long jump.Jon Hart second in both hurdles.

Jimmy Mallette placed second in shot and third in discuss. Justin Martin was third in 400. Eric Danner placed in the the two mile with a third place. Kenny Benner won the two-mile and came in third in the triple jump. John Roddy was second in the 400 and third in the long jump.

The Live frosh/soph girls won 91-9 to improve to 5-0. Gilroy got three seconds, and that was all.

Azucena Atanacio won the shot and disc and was on the winning mile relay team. Leslie DeDios won the 200 and triple jump. Ashley Ceaser won the 100 and high jump. Mattie Smith won long jump and 400.

Shannon Kelly won 100 hurdles and came in third in high jump. Kristina Elmasu was second in high hurdles, and Kristina Schreiver was second in 400 and long jump. Dia Foster finished third high hurdles.
