The Live Oak Acorns defeated North Salinas 4-0 Monday afternoon to resume the winning ways of last season.

“They played a lot better today,” said coach Tony Vasquez about the way the team bounced back after the league opening tie against San Benito. “The intensity was there for both halves.”

The Balers tied the Acorns in the Tri-County League opener at Live Oak.

“Hollister is a pretty good team for our league,” Vasquez said. “Of all the teams that we have played so far in preseason, Hollister is probably the worst team. We played good against all these CCS caliber teams. Then we come to league, and the girls weren’t there for both halves.”

Bridgett Bonfiglio and Gina Estrada had first-half goals for the Acorns (3-6-2, 1-0-1 TCAL) against the Vikings.

Bonfiglio knocked a bouncing corner kick from specialist Michelle McDonald.

For the Acorns’ second goal, Jenae Moten, beat a defender and made a though pass to Estrada, who finished.

In the second half, Gina Sanders found McDonald for a goal.

Freshman Jaime Hickey capped the scoring on a penalty kick after she got tripped up from the left side.

“We just need to finish more,” Vasquez said. “It could have been 10-0 if these girls could put the ball in the back of the net. That has been our biggest problem is finishing.”

Part of the win was the strong defense that shut out the Vikings.

“They didn’t have many shots,” Vasquez said. “They didn’t let anything go over their heads. And they stopped them one v. one.”
