Live Oak swept North Salinas in the last duel meet of the season Tuesday afternoon, with the boys winning 21-36 and the girls squeaking by 29-30 at the Anderson Dam Course in Morgan Hill.
Live Oak runners finished first, second and third on the girls side, while the boys took first, third, fourth and fifth place.
Senior Daniella King was the difference maker for the girls squad, finishing in third place with a time of 22:52.
With King taking third, the girls were guaranteed victory. Had she finished lower, the Acorns would have lost. North Salinas took forth through 10th place.
“I thought Daniella ran a real courageous race to hang on so we could get that victory,” Coach Dean Raymond said.
Cobbie Jones finished first (20:26) and Yesenia Miranda took second (21:42) for Live Oak.
Tuesday marked the first time this season the Acorns had taken the top three spots for either boys or girls.
“We’ve gone against some really talented schools this year,” Raymond said, “so this is the first opportunity we’ve had to sweep the top three like that.”
Billy Wong took first for the boys with a time of 16:46, while fellow Acorns Nick Mott (17:41), Jonathan Kamei (18:10) and Jesus Antanacio (18:17) took third, forth and fifth.
After the victory, Raymond was upbeat about how his team ran in the meet.
“I was pretty pleased with their performances,” he said. “Not only the girls – Daniella stepping up. But Nick Mott ran a great race. He’s really improving on his time. I was pleased with his effort.”
With the League Championships coming up, Live Oak will have a tough hill to climb in order to get into the Central Coast Section Playoffs.
The Acorns are one of four teams – along with Salinas, San Benito and Gilroy – battling for three CCS spots.
In order to advance to CCS, the Acorns (2-4 TCAL) will have to defeat Gilroy when the two teams meet in the Tri-County Athletic League Championships, which are scheduled to start at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1 at Torro Park in Salinas.
