With just two more meetings before a decision is expected to be made on secondary school boundaries, the recommendations from the boundary committee will be a big item for discussion during Monday’s regular School Board meeting.

Boundaries for the middle schools are being reviewed in light of the opening of the new Sobrato High School, scheduled for August 2004. With only one high school currently, there are no existing high school boundaries.

To begin the discussion, trustees will review the committee’s guiding principles and the rationale for changing the boundaries, as presented by Superintendent Carolyn McKennan and Deputy Superintendent Bonnie Branco, who chairs the committee.

Some trustees raised questions during the Sept. 22 meeting concerning the weighting or ranking in importance of the principles by committee members when they evaluated the options.

Branco told the board she would bring back the ranking by committee members.

Trustees will then look at the two remaining options for secondary boundaries and the four remaining options for elementary boundaries.

A decision on elementary boundaries will not be made until January 2004. Implementation of new boundaries, both secondary and elementary, is slated for August 2004. Trustee Shellé Thomas has expressed concern that the board is moving too quickly on redrawing the elementary boundaries.

Also, trustees will vote Monday on a tentative contract agreement between the district and the Service Employees International Union.

In other items, Director of Construction/Modernization Al Solis will present an update on the Sobrato budget, and trustees will discuss end of the year promotion ceremonies at elementary and middle schools, in light of complaints from some families about last year’s ceremonies.

The School Board will hold its regular meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at the District Office, 15600 Concord Circle. Details: 201-6000.
