San Jose – Brittney Ondich’s solo home run in the seventh inning proved to be the winning run as Live Oak opened its Blossom Valley Athletic League schedule by edging host Leland 3-2.
The game was scoreless through four innings before the Acorns (5-2, 1-0) broke through for a fifth-inning run. Sarah Locarnini singled, stole second and scored on Taylor Sutton’s double.
Live Oak scored twice in the seventh as Locarnini walked and scored as Sutton’s sacrifice bunt was thrown away. Ondich then homered.
Leland scored twice in the bottom of the seventh on three hits. An error, sacrifice and groundout allowed the Chargers to put the tying run on third. But Tricia Goularte struck out the next batter looking.
Goularte tossed a seven-hitter with nine strikeouts, five caught looking. She allowed one earned run. Sutton had two doubles and two sacrifices. Ondich also had two hits. Catcher Kourtney Kientzy threw out two runners trying to steal.
The Acorns are in action at 3:30pm today at Piedmont Hills.
Sobrato Basball
San Jose – Two days after pitching exceptionally well and not hitting, Sobrato was able to get its offense in gear but couldn’t stop once-beaten Branham’s hitting attack.
The Bruins (12-1 overall, 8-0 league) parlayed a 13-hit attack into a 15-7 win over the Bulldogs in a Blossom Valley Athletic League Santa Teresa Division game Friday.
Sam Whittemore led Branham, going 3 for 3 with three runs scored and six RBIs. Michael Durham scored twice and knocked in three runs, and Robert Flores and Craig Hertler each collected two hits and two RBIs to lead the Bruins to their 10th straight win.
Sobrato continues its BVAL schedule with a 3:30pm game Wednesday at Mt. Pleasant.
