LIVE OAK HIGH SCHOOL junior Abe Butte defeated three other Rotary Club speech contest winners from Gilroy, San Juan Bautista and Hollister during the area Rotary Youth Speech Contest March 21 at the Golden Oak Restaurant in Morgan Hill.

Butte now goes to the regional semifinals in Watsonville on March 28.

Butte received $200 in prize money in the area-level competition.

Last month Butte won the Rotary Club of Morgan Hill’s competition, which qualified him to compete against the winners of speech contests sponsored by other South Valley Rotary clubs.

Members of Toastmasters International judged the students’ five-minute speeches on the theme, “Lead the Way.”

Butte is the son of Maria Elena Butte of Morgan Hill. His advisor at Live Oak is Donna Cowan. He is currently South Coast regional vice president of the national FFA organization, an agricultural education program. He wants to attend a four-year university and is thinking about going into law.

The contest helps young people know the importance of speaking effectively before a group, expands public knowledge of what Rotary is and does throughout the world and allows high school students to compete for prize money to further their education.
