Dear Editor,

Currently, in the District Office, there is a lot of discussion and rumor regarding the possibility of MHSD teachers receiving a salary increase in their current negotiated contract. The current negotiated contract is to be discussed by the Board this coming Monday evening in closed session.

I would like to remind the Board that during budget discussions in April 2004, the $255,000 District Office/Admi-nistrative Restructure was approved at the April 19, 2004, meeting. The essential portion of this restructure was the implementation of 20 furlough days (one month’s salary) for each and every classified worker in the District Office. It was stated at that time by the Board, superintendent and administrative management that there would not be any salary increases until the 20 furlough days that the classified staff received were reinstated.

Classified workers in this district have received salary cuts each fiscal year for the last three years to help balance the budget. Salaries of teachers, the superintendent, deputy/assistant superintendents, directors and supervisors have all remained constant and in some cases increased. I am aware that everyone in the District Office has assumed or been assigned additional duties. However, the only employees trying to do their additional duties in a month’s less time are the classified workers.

I personally feel that this District has treated their classified employees shamefully and I am asking the Board to stand up and speak out for the classified employees of this District as they said they would last April.
