“Bill” passed in his Carmel home on Tuesday, October 9th, 2012,after enjoying more than eight months at age 100. Ever the fascinating conversationalist, he was able to engage with some of his dearest long term friends who visited him there during his last two months.  

 Bill was born in Hollister, CA on February 11th, 1912, the son of Grace and Clarence Cagney.

 He was preceeded in death by his sisters Helen Smith and Claire Berglin, and his brother Clarence “Bud” Cagney.

 His education included graduation from St. Mary’s College, Moraga in 1933 and a Masters Degree from University of Southern Californa, Los Angeles in 1937. There was also graduate work at University of California Berkeley and Stanford University.

 He served his country in the US Army. He was Active Duty during WWII , Reserve duty for 22 years, and then retired Lt. Colonel. He taught school back in his home town of Hollister and was Superintendant of Schools, San Benito County for six terms. His third career was selling real estate with his good friend Henry Peterson in his Hollister office 1975-1985.

 Organizations he was a member of included Veterans of Foreign War, American Legion Hollister, and Sons of the American Revolution. He was a supporter of The American Ireland Fund and enjoyed a close relationship with the Sisters of Notre Dame.

 Private funeral services were held at the Old Mission San Juan Bautista on Monday, October 15, 2012, and he is buried and resting in peace with his family in the San Juan Bautista Cemetery
