Everyone who has ever played high school football, myself included, dreams of lacing it up and throwing on their helmet and pads for one final game.
No matter if your final game resulted in winning a championship or finishing an 0-10 campaign (the latter being my experience), the taste always lingers to play one more game.
The Charlie Wedemeyer All-Star Football game, which takes place Wednesday at 7:30pm at San Jose City College, provides the fitting end to many great high school players’ careers.
For the Live Oak trio, running back Dustin Muhn, linebacker Nathan Goldie and lineman Jason Romero, it is exactly that.
Dustin Muhn, who spent the past season running over the Tri-County Athletic League competition to the tune of 1,477 yards and 15 touchdowns, is heading off to Cal next season, where he will play rugby.
So for him, the Wedemeyer game is his final opportunity to showcase his football skills.
“It’s just great to play one more game under the lights again. I miss the lights,” Muhn said after practice last week.
Goldie and Romero echoed similar statements and all the players involved in the game are surely excited to be guaranteed at least one more chance to play.
Many of them will go on to continue a college football career. But many will not.
“It’s kind of like the last hurrah to show everybody you’ve still got it,” said Travis Nilmeyer, a Morgan Hill resident and fullback from Valley Christian. “Because for some of these kids this is the last time they’ll ever touch a football.”
Nilmeyer, who will attend San Jose State University next year, is enjoying his first chance to play with his friends from Morgan Hill, but still knows it’s an intense game.
“We’re supposed to have fun, but let’s win it,” Nilmeyer said.
Here’s wishing good luck to all the participants in the game. Whether it’s a hellacious hit or game-winning touchdown, everyone wants to finish their career with a good taste in their mouth and hopefully they all can.
