EDITOR:
As the 29th season of the South Valley Symphony approaches with our annual “POPS” concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at the Gavilan College theater, I wish to take this opportunity to acknowledge those who assisted me during my three-year tenure as president of the board of directors.
Initially, my warmest thanks and gratitude to the Gilroy Dispatch, Morgan Hill Times and Hollister Free Lance for their splendid coverage of our concerts including splendid photographs of artists and musicians. There certainly cannot be any excuse for failure to attend our concerts due to lack of publicity announcing same.
My warmest thanks to those merchants which saw fit to place ads in our season program ranging in size from business card to full page. The increase over the past three years enabled us to almost recoup our printing costs. It also allowed us to pt on quality productions.
Attendance continued to increase gradually for the past few years although there is definite room for improvement. While the word appears to be getting our with respect to splendid overall quality of our concerts no doubt the prevailing economic conditions plus other events which coincide with our performance detesare the culprits for inability to obtain standing room only crowds. Certainly the cost of tickets are priced at levels well below similar events taking place in larger cities in our county. We have been somewhat successful in attracting people from Morgan Hill, Hollister, San Juan Bautista and Aromas to our concerts no doubt to the aforementioned publicity.
We truly are fortunate to have a splendid cultural asset with the symphony. Many kudos to the Gavilan College administrators for offering this class thereby reaching out to the communities served by this institution. By proving a splendid rehearsal room plus a most comfortable performing venue in their air-conditioned theater, musicians are able to rehearse and perform in great comfort. My warmest thanks to Paul Skelton, theater manager, for handling the logistics associated with putting on our concerts.
Special thanks go out to all those who made financial donations which help cover the costs of concert productions including the salary of our musical director and conductor Henry Mollicone. Without this generous outpouring of financial support we simply would not exist at the current level of orchestra size and talent.
