A large truck pulling a trailer of red bell peppers lost its entire load of produce, after the driver took the interchange between Highway 25 and northbound U.S 101 too fast, said Jaime Rios, spokesman of the California Highway Patrol.
And, the truck’s load was too full and when the driver, 49-year-old Ismael Gutierrez from Delano, took the turn and the trailer tipped over Saturday morning, Rios said.
The spilled produce covered most of Highway 101’s right-hand lane, forcing the CHP to divert traffic through the left lane.
Rios did not know how long it took before all lanes in the area were opened up or if the entrance to Highway 101 from Highway 25 was blocked, he said.
The truck, from Bakersfield, was in the process of delivering a load of bell peppers to an unknown location, Rios said.
The truck was the only vehicle involved in the incident and no injuries were reported, Rios said.
The driver was cited for having too large of a load for a truck of its size, Rios said.
