Dear Editor,
Thank you for the opportunity to serve our children during the past eight years. Four years ago I made a pact with my family that this would be my last term.
During my service I’ve learned many lessons. For instance, I’ve learned the importance of holding firm to one’s values and ideas. I’ve learned that there are many sides to the truth; that it is important to listen to those who have a voice as well as those who do not. The importance of the importance of kindness, decency, courage and forgiveness plays major role in a board member’s decisions.
I congratulate the new board members. Goals are hard to accomplish and are laden with risk. You will have different challenges and new solutions to old problems. Success will depend upon how well you stay focused on what is in the best interest of our children.
I would like to thank my family, as being a school board member is truly a family affair. The political process is not always kind, but my family has been 100 percent supportive. To my husband – his love for me provided much of my strength. I promise – no more pizza on Monday nights! I would like to thank our senior cabinet and Julie, our administrative assistant. Each of them represents grace under pressure. From them I learned the importance of being hopeful, idealistic yet realistic, daring and decent.
My thanks to all of the MHSD employees, as I am grateful that our paths crossed and that our lives touched. Each of you will be remembered with deep admiration and affection. And to the community – I shall always feel honored by the journey we traveled together in search of, “the American dream for our children.” Thank you for the journey.
Jan Masuda, MHSD Board Member
