Live Oak drops close game to Lincoln; Sobrato shuts out San
Jose.
Live Oak vs. Lincoln

For the second game in the row, the Live Oak boys soccer team played against one of the top teams in its division and stayed neck and neck for most of the game.

On Thursday, the Acorns lost 4-1 to Lincoln, which is 13-1 and ranked No. 1in the Blossom Valley Athletic League West Valley Division. On Jan. 16, Live Oak tied Overfelt, No. 2 in the division, 1-1.

Although only scoring one goal, the Acorns held the top-ranked Lincoln team scoreless for most of the first half of the game.

“We were outmatched by the best team in the league,” said Live Oak coach Tony Goble. “When I saw them play earlier in the season, I knew they would be league champs.”

Goble said the Acorns used a different game plan against Lincoln. He knew that the Lions had a great offense, so he told his team to attack the ball and not sit back and wait for Lincoln to attack.

“We knew we couldn’t stop their offense,” Goble said, “So we packed

in a little more on defense. We used a counter attack game plan.”

Junior midfielder Yrbyn Davis scored the lone goal for the Acorns. His goal came off a corner kick by junior defender Matt Altamirano.

All season, Goble has talked about his team being young. He feels that playing against top teams like Lincoln and Overfelt has helped his team mature.

“Playing this kind of competition helps our team grow and get better,” he said.
