Things got interesting in the West Valley Division Friday night when the Sobrato girls basketball team suffered its first league loss at the hands of Yerba Buena.
The Bulldogs fell 44-40, snapping a nine-game winning streak. Sobrato still is in first place atop the division, but now finds itself in a must-win against second place Lincoln on the road 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Lincoln hasn’t lost since playing Sobrato on Jan. 14 and is now one-game back at 8-2 in league play.
Against Yerba Buena, Sobrato’s offense couldn’t get rolling.
The Aztec Warriors came into the game with just one win on the season and were winless in league going into Friday.
The Bulldogs were held to single digits in three quarters, including the crucial fourth where they were outscored 13-9 to fall by four.
Sobrato started the game slow, putting up seven points, but also held the Aztec Warriors to just six.
Yerba Buena came out strong in the second quarter, putting up 15 points to take a 21-16 lead at the half.
Sobrato came out of the break with a mission, tying the game thanks to a 15-point effort of its own.
But the Bulldogs couldn’t keep the momentum rolling in the final frame to take the loss.
Hazel Hill continued to shine for the Bulldogs, putting up 19 points and 10 rebounds in the losing effort.
Karly Rebozzi added 10 points with Tauheedah Id-Deen putting up six.
Sobrato needs wins Tuesday night and Thursday against San Jose to clinch a share of the West Valley title.
