The stakes were high for Sobrato as the Hill game could have put the Bulldogs one game back of Lincoln, which is currently atop the Blossom Valley Athletic League West Valley Division standings. Lincoln is 10-2 in the regular season with a one-game lead over Del Mar and two-game lead over
Hill, San Jose and Sobrato heading into the last week.
The Bulldogs are currently 8-4 in league (16-7 overall) and are tied with both Hill and San Jose as the regular season draws to a close. Of the three teams, Sobrato appears to have the most difficult schedule playing Del Mar and Overfelt on the road. The Falcons finish their season against San Jose in a game.
If Sobrato can beat Del Mar today, (which the Bulldogs did at home by a score of 48-39) and take care of business against Overfelt (they beat them 59-21 at home earlier in the year), the Bulldogs will need San Jose to beat Hill in order for the Bulldogs to have a chance to finish in second place.
Hill lost to San Jose earlier in the year 52-34 in one of their only lopsided losses of the season.
With all of the different scenarios, the Bulldogs will try to focus primarily on the things that they can control and look to finish out the season with two more wins. With a 2-0 closing week, the = Bulldogs could conceivably gain consideration for an at-large bid in the Central Coast Sectional playoffs with a record of 10-4 in league play and an overall record of 18-7.
But the game against Del Mar won’t be easy. The Dons (14-10, 9-3) have won three straight by an average score of 54-19. In its most recent game Thursday against James Lick, Del Mar raced to a 46-9 halftime advantage and breezed to a 70-17 win. Elli Batinich had 18 points and nine rebounds, and Kellene Condie had 17 points and six steals for the Dons.
Sobrato plays at Del Mar at 7pm today, and heads back to San Jose on Thursday to face Overfelt (2-13, 2-10).
