Sobrato’s Timmy Thompson swims the breaststroke during the

MORGAN HILL — No section-qualifying standards were met Thursday, but the Sobrato swimming teams didn’t need them in getting past Mount Pleasant.

The boys squad ran its undefeated record in Santa Teresa Division duals to 4-0 with a 129-30 soaking, while the girls team won 100-62 to move to 3-1.

Already part of Sobrato’s CIF-Central Coast Section-bound 400-yard freestyle relay team, Ammon Suzuki highlighted the afternoon by nearly adding another CCS standard to his collection. The senior sprinted to first place in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.58 seconds — less than a second away from advancing.

“Ammon will be there,” Sobrato second-year coach Paul Harris said. “If you mess up any part of the 50 free, you miss your opportunity. Ammon’s form was a little off.”

Hoping to squeeze out more section qualifiers, Harris jumbled his relay rosters, moving his 400-freestyle relay foursome into the 200-yard medley relay, and switching Suzuki out for Prashan Welipitiya in the 400-freestyle relay. The move almost paid off.

“Our medley relay did all right, but our (200-yard freestyle relay) was right there,” Harris said.

That group included brothers Timmy and Danny Thompson, Suzuki and Paul Watts, who won the event in 53.09.

The Sobrato boys won nine of the 11 events.

“We’ve been winning a lot on the boys side just like you hope to,” Harris said. “I expect no other school is going to come close to beating us, but we haven’t seen Prospect or Piedmont Hills, and they were in the ‘A’ league last year.”

Piedmont Hills will visit Sobrato on Thursday.

The Lady Bulldogs aren’t flirting with CCS standards quite yet, but they are certainly in contention to win a division title this season.

“We don’t have any girls that are close to CCS yet, but they’re still improving,” Harris said.

Sobrato went 7 for 11 on the girls side, receiving three wins from Anjana Devaraj, Brittney Doutt, Melanie Jasper and Devin Koehler. The four made up the first-place 200-medley (2:16.00) and 400-freestyle (4:37.63) relays.

Doutt also won the 100-yard butterfly (1:17.86), Jasper the 100-yardfreestyle (1:09.05), Koehler the 100-yard backstroke (1:18.95) and Devaraj the 100-yard breaststroke (1:27.52).
