Dear Editor,

I am highly outraged that the city council has decided to pay off Helene Leichter, the city attorney, in the amount of approximately one quarter of a million dollars. On top of that, the immediate proposal is to hire another city attorney without disclosing the reason for the large payout.

Obviously, the city council must have made very serious mistakes for which they could be sued or there would have been no need to make this payoff. I believe that the citizens deserve to know the cause of the error and what has been the corrective action to ensure that this does not happen again.

Will we hire another scam artist who will take us to the cleaners again? Without a disclosure of the facts, there is no accountability for such expenditures.

That money could have been used for improved lighting to make Monterey Road safer at night. Or it could have been used for the new library, which is being built with the most inexpensive materials due to lack of funds (it is being built with stucco and inexpensive metal; no tile, stone, brick or other decorative materials).

Without disclosure of the reasons for this payoff, citizens cannot help but wonder about what is going on and whether we have placed our trust in the right elected officials.
