Backed by a five inning shutout performance by San Francisco Giants pitcher Jason Schmidt in a rehab assignment, the San Jose Giants earned a season-opening series split at Visalia.
Schmidt’s two-hit effort helped earn San Jose a 10-5 victory in Saturday’s third game of the four-game series against the Oaks.
Schmidt, a nine-year Major League veteran, is expected to start for San Francisco on Friday.
In Saturday’s victory, San Jose jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Julio Cordido’s three-run homer in the second inning in support of Schmidt.
The Giants added a run in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth on Julian Benavidez’s two-run homer.
San Jose added two runs in the seventh, a solo homer by Brad Vericker in the eighth and an RBI double by Todd Jennings in the ninth.
In Thursday’s opener, San Jose (2-2) beat Visalia 4-2 behind Carlos Sosa’s bases-clearing triple in the top of the seventh inning.
The Giants lost 4-1 on Friday night and fell 7-4 on Sunday.
San Jose was scheduled to open another four-game series on the road against the Modesto A’s on Monday.
The Giants will return to Municipal Stadium for their home opener on Friday against Visalia.
The first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive a free San Jose Giants magnet schedule.
Friday’s 7 p.m. game will begin a three-game series against the Oaks, which includes a 5 p.m. game on Saturday and a 1 p.m. matinee on Sunday.
San Jose will begin a four-game home series against Modesto on Monday, April 19.
