WOODSIDE — Live Oak lost 47-12 to Peninsula Green in Skyhawk Conference rugby Saturday at Woodside High School, but the game’s officiating became just as big of a story.

Both coaches agreed to eject the referees after they erred on four possession and rule-enforcement calls in the first half, including one that gave way to the first try which was scored by Peninsula Green. The match played out evenly before that as both teams exchanged possession, territory and scoring chances in the first 20 minutes.

With their coach doing the officiating, the Beavers took advanage of Live Oak’s miscues late in the first half to lead 17-0 at the break.

The Acorns showed life in the second half, scoring two tries. Senior stand-off Joe Guidry touched down the first on a quick tap-and-go following a penalty called against Peninsula Green. Senior flanker Eric Webb followed with the second — after the Beavers punched two more scores through the Live Oak defense. Junior fullback Andrew Pitzer converted Guidry’s try to round out the Acorns’ scoring.

Peninsula Green closed out the final half with three quickly scored tries on strong plays.

Live Oak will resume league play Saturday against the first-place East Palo Alto Razorbacks. The game time and location are yet to be determined.
