Finding people to carpool or vanpool with just got a little easier. RIDES for Bay Area Commuters, which operates the Bay Area rideshare program under the region’s new 511 traveler information service, has launched a free Internet-based service providing Bay Area commuters a way to instantly find others who are interested in sharing their commute. The free service can be found at www.rideshare.511.org
“With just a few clicks of the mouse, this new self-serve system enables commuters to find and contact potential carpool or vanpool partners who travel to and from the same area and who share the same work schedule,” said Catherine Showalter, executive director of RIDES for Bay Area Commuters, the nonprofit organization that operates the region’s commute alternatives program.
“It’s a perfect way for individuals who don’t want to drive alone to find someone to share their ride,” Showalter said.
Registering with the new service couldn’t be easier. Once you’ve entered an email address, selected a password and input the starting point and destination of your commute, a map will appear showing approximate locations of potential carpool or vanpool partners, as well as a corresponding list of contact information. You can then email or call individuals on the list so rideshare arrangements can be made almost immediately.
Those without Internet access can talk to a RIDES transportation consultant by calling 511 (press 4 or say “carpooling”) to have their list of carpool or vanpool matches mailed to them
For security purposes, registration is password protected. This allows you to access your account and make adjustments to your profile to reflect changes in your commute, such as new hours or job relocation. After you find carpool or vanpool partners, the rideshare Web site can provide you with information on Park & Ride lots (perfect spots to meet your new carpool or vanpool), carpool lanes, county-sponsored incentives and other transportation alternatives to make your commute faster and easier.
Eco-Fact of the Week: Nearly 80 percent of South Bay commuters drive alone.
Eco-Web Site of the Week: Naturally, this week’s web site is www.rideshare.511.org
