Dear Editor,

Unfortunately, as in many businesses, rumors can run rampant. We are writing to you out of concern regarding a “rumor” that has made its way to our offices.

“Rumor” has it that the Board of Education is ready to reach a deal with the teachers’ union regarding a pay raise. We find this “rumor” extremely difficult to believe, as we felt certain that Board members were of the opinion that no raises would be given until all classified employees received their positions; reduction in days; and reduction in hours restored. To date we have not heard of any reinstatements.

During many of the 2003-2004 School Board meetings, classified employees spoke before you regarding the lay-offs, furloughs, etc. At the April 26, 2004, School Board meeting, Board member Jan Masuda suggested, “The staff recommend a prioritization process for reinstating cuts to budget if money becomes available.” Has this been done? If so, when?

Please reassure us that this is truly a “rumor” and the Board will commit to restoring all that was lost by the classified employees before any other commitment is made to another bargaining unit.

Thank you for your prompt response to a very big concern.
