TRACY – The Pride under 16 ‘A’ team came away with second place trophies last weekend during the Tracy NSA National Qualifier.
The Pride had great outings from three pitchers over the weekend – Katityn Rauschnot, Ann Baumbgardner and Cristina Sanidad. Rauschnot pitched the first game against the California Odyssey, which proved to be the toughest game of the tournament.
The Pride had only two hits – both in the first inning by Baumgardner and Rauschnot. In the second inning, Nicole Clay reached base on a walk with two outs.
But she was stranded on base. That was the last Pride player to reach base in the 4-0 loss.
In the second game, the Pride bats came alive. Baumgardner started at pitcher, and Sanidad finished up in the sixth inning against the California Magic. Live Oak players Alyssa Adamo and Eileen Grove each had singles.
Grove added a long triple to get things going in the fifth. Sanidad hit a double to score Grove. Clay walked, and Jackie Tennant hit a hard shot into left to score both Grove and Clay.
Defensively, the Pride was sharp as they allowed only one run in the win.
The third game against the Cupertino Inferno was a hitting fest by both teams. Sanidad got the start on the mound. Offensively, Adamo went 3-for-3 at the plate.
Katie Hillman, Catalina Rawers, Julie Jacobson, Rauschnot and Tennant all hit singles for the Pride. In the third inning, Kaitlin McHargue smacked a double to begin the inning. It was one of nine hits for the Pride in the game.
After Saturday’s pool play, the Pride was seeded second. In the championship round, they matched up against the California Magic again in the early game.
The Pride had 10 hits in the game to advance to the championship even though the Magic pitched four pitchers in the game. Adamo, Baumgardner (2), Hillman, Rauschnot, Rawers, Clay, McHargue and Tennant all had singles. Sanidad had a nice sac bunt in the game as well to help the Pride win 2-0.
In the championship game, the Pride once again faced the California Odyssey. Rauschnot took the mound with Nicole Clay behind the plate. Rauschnot started the second inning with a double. Hillman came in as a courtesy runner.
Sanidad sacrificed her over to third base. Then Grove had a nice bunt to squeeze. In a close play at home, Hillman was called out by the umpire.
In the fifth inning, Rauschnot led off with another single, but she was left stranded on base.
The Pride had another chance in the sixth inning after Tennant lead off with a single in the sixth inning. Jacobson was hit by a pitch to give the Pride two runners on with no outs.
But the Odyssey pitcher got the next three batters out to end the game. The Odyssey had only one earned run, but that was enough to give them first place.
The Pride 16 team will head to Modesto for the final weekend in June.
