Live Oak boys secure West Valley Division title
BELMONT
Led by senior Winston van Keulen, the Sobrato boys cross country team earned a fourth straight trip to the Central Coast Section Championships by placing 10th in Monday’s Blossom Valley Athletic League Finals.
Van Keulen finished 13th overall, covering the 2.95-mile Crystal Springs course in 16 minutes, 59.5 seconds. Sophomore Ryan Corvese took 48th in 18:11.9, and freshmen teammates Cody Hulme (18:21.6) and Matt Hanlon (18:51.2) followed in 55th and 72nd for the Bulldogs, who will send their seven best runners to Toro Park on Nov. 13 for the Division II meet.
The rest of Sobrato’s contingent will include freshmen Cody Hulme, Matt Hanlon, and Kyle Alexander, sophomore Ryan Corvese, junior Zach Ankiel and senior Derek Diesenroth.
Freshman sensation Kalum Bergstrom (18:23) will represent Live Oak in the Division III meet after earning at at-large berth with a 57th-place effort. He helped the Acorns clinch a West Valley Division title.
Sobrato junior Sarah Gilbert paced all local girls, finishing 13th in 20:33.8. She will be joined at CCS by teammates Courtney Ellenburg, Emily Thoms, Cassandra Valenzuela, Lindsey Ellenburg, Cynia Sapp and Kiley Foster. They placed 13th as a team Monday.
Live Oak senior Chelsie Faulk (21:05.7) and sophomore Amber Thomas (22:34.7) earned at-large invites in 21st and 56th.
Also at BVALs, Sobrato’s Santa Teresa Division-champion frosh team placed second behind Willow Glen.
GIRLS GOLF
Live Oak senior Paige Flores birdied two holes Tuesday on the way to ending her prep career with a 32nd-place effort in the Central Coast Section Championship at Rancho Canada Golf Club in Carmel.
Flores shot 16-over-par 71.
“It was a great way for me to end the season,” she said. “I had a lot of fun. The year definitely went by fast, and I’m glad I made it this far.”
Making her CCS finals debut, Sobrato sophomore Jordan Maharaj placed 29th at 86. She hopes to build off the experience.
“It was an honor to be there. It really made me feel good playing with so many good players,” Maharaj said. “I did everything I wanted to this year.”
WATER POLO
The final rounds of the Blossom Valley Athletic League Tournament resume at 2 p.m. today with the semifinals at Live Oak High School. The boys and girls championships are scheduled for Saturday.
