EDITOR:
Planned Parenthood Mar Monte is deeply disappointed with President Bush’s signing of the so-called Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003.
A pregnancy can go terribly wrong, and this ban outlaws medically necessary abortions that women need for serious medical conditions, such as renal failure or diabetes.
Any woman who has ever been pregnant, given birth, had a miscarriage, Cesarean, or hysterectomy-or anyone who has loved a woman who faced the same-knows that pregnancy and childbearing can take unexpected twists, encounter unexpected complications, and sometimes have tragic consequences.
Never before have politicians inserted themselves so blatantly into the sensitive and vital medical decisions made by women, their families and their doctors. For Congress to impose its ideological agenda at the expense of women’s health is unconscionable.
This ban is clearly about politics, and not about helping women.
We must fight this ban with vigor. If we do not, women will suffer. And as a nation, we cannot allow this to happen.
