Cajun food coming soon to Morgan Hill

“Red Phone, I consider myself an ardent supporter of the local Santa Clara Valley wineries and purchased a passport in order to take part in last year’s Passport Weekend activities. However, I was shocked and dismayed to find out that I will be required to purchase another $30 passport in order to take part in the March 27-28 event. I had assumed that the Santa Clara Valley Passport had no expiration date. Further, there is no information in last year’s passport to suggest that it has an expiration date – even stating clearly that ‘the next Passport Weekend is Sat. & Sun., March 27 & 28, 2010.’ I would like to suggest to the wineries of Santa Clara Valley organization that they rectify this error. If not, it appears to me that they are participating in a classic ‘bait and switch money grab. I would hate to think that was the case. Thanks.”

Red Phone: Dear Vinophile, unfortunately Red Phone did not get to your question before last weekend’s event. Red Phone contacted Pam Gimenez, office manager at the Gilroy Visitor’s Bureau, which sold tickets to the event. She said the tickets are good for the Spring and Fall events.

“This is the first year they’re doing two events,” she said, comparing it to what Santa Cruz does. “They’re trying to do something different and get a little more bang for their buck.”

So good caller, if you purchased tickets and participated in last weekend’s event, you can join the Fall Passport Weekend, which takes place Oct. 2 and 3.

Reader craves a nice, juicy steak

“Dear Red Phone, I love living in Morgan Hill but the other day we were thinking that it would be nice to have a nice juicy steak. Then we remembered there isn’t a steakhouse in Morgan Hill. Has there ever been interest for a steakhouse restaurant to establish in Morgan Hill or is there any possibility of one in the future?”

Red Phone: Dear Craving a Juicy Steak, you are correct in that there are no steakhouses in Morgan Hill. In fact, a recent Web poll in the Times showed 57 percent of 609 respondents said they would like a steakhouse.

That being said, good caller, there are several places to get a good steak. Trail Dust, El Toro Brewery, Chili’s and Sizzler, to name a few, but if you really want a great steak, go to Poppy’s Fish Poultry and More, buy a rib eye then take it home and barbecue it to your taste.

As far as one coming in the future, Dickey’s BBQ will open this summer at Cochrane Commons. Hope that answers your questions.
