U11 girls Storm team moves on in State Cup; hasn’t allowed a
goal in eight games
The weekend of January 21st started with 72 teams vying for the under 11 girls State Cup Championship. By the time the last goal had been scored on Sunday, the OV Storm was one of only 18 teams remaining.

The Storm swept through their bracket in shutout fashion, starting with a 3-0 win over the Mill Valley Rockers. Monica Luna was the dominate player on the field, contributing a goal and an assist to lead the attack. Michaela Swensen and Taylor Slattery added the final two tallies.

In the second game the Storm beat the East Diablo Hurricanes 2-0. Amber Thomas scored the game’s first goal midway through the second half on a fine assist from Slattery.

The Storm added an insurance goal on a play that started with Janessa Garcia crossing the ball to Slattery, who pushed it over to Swensen for an easy tap in.

The Storm wrapped up the weekend with a 4-0 victory over the Sacramento Extreme. Tula Urban scored the game’s opening goal from outside the box on a nice drop pass from Macey Dunne. Dunne then followed with a goal of her own. Rebekah Inouye also scored minutes later to ice the game.

Fullbacks Tori Gulla, Sydney Barker, Paige Menage and Emily Kyle provided the shutout defense while flu-ridden Molly Cuevas provided the team with short bursts of inspirational play. With the three shutouts this weekend, the Storm has not allowed a goal in their past eight games.

The “Sweet 16” round of the State Cup Tournament continues in Morgan Hill on Saturday and Sunday February 11-12 at the Morgan Hill Soccer Complex.

The OV Storm, as well as OV Toros U12 girls team and the OV Sting U13 girls teams will be participating in the “Sweet 16” round of the tournament in their respective divisions.
