Of late, I have been thinking about how vulnerable our students are. At Sobrato this year we have now had two tragic events affect our student population. In the fall, there was the shooting death of Tara Romero, along with the injuries of three other students. And now it is three weeks since the disappearance of Sierra LaMar, who was abducted while walking to the school bus stop the morning of March 16. Of course we are all hoping that she will be safely returned to her family.  

The city’s decision to spend a bulk of the remaining $19.3 million on renovating downtown over extending Santa Teresa Boulevard - otherwise known as the Hale Avenue extension - is the correct decision, however it’s not an either-or question.

Writing may not seem like a strenuous activity, but it can hurt! Gripping a small implement places potentially painful pressures on the tiny muscles of the hands and fingers. Writing frequently or for long durations escalates the risk of pain.

Anyone who isn’t familiar with the plays of Howard Pinter should be alerted of what to expect. They are not everyone’s cup of tea. Pinter can terrorize with characters who inhale the air around them with long pauses and stories that really have no real plot but are gripping, cruel and callous.

Millard Hoyle was the publisher of the Hollister Free Lance many years ago. He was a man well known and well liked in the San Benito County community, and he had a big influence on me going into journalism. Hoyle knew that if a community newspaper like the Free Lance is going to be successful, it needs to serve the public good by informing citizens with local news and providing a forum for diverse local opinion.
