Terrible news, but there are so many good aspects to the YMCA programs

This I can say about a terribly difficult situation at Paradise Elementary School: There are very good people who run the YMCA programs who are conscientous and horrified that an arrest for sexual abuse of a child has taken place at a YMCA program. I know this because I’m on the YMCA volunteer board. My fellow board members and the staff members I have met are very dedicated people who work hard and sincerely for the betterment of the community and for the positive development of so many children. They will not duck or try to spin the situation, it will be met head on with great sadness and dissected thoroughly to see what changes can be made. One of the greatest evils is the sexual abuse of children for its horrid nature – in this case an attack on a defenseless 6-year-old girl – and the fact that it leaves scars that last a lifetime. It’s unconscienable, but it is also a testament to this girl’s courage and heart that she spoke up. It’s truly heroic. My heart goes out to the families involved and all those who have to deal with such a terrible mess.

It’s not all about the money

When meeting with a financial advisor, the purpose for the appointment will somehow revolve around money; you need help with a 401(k) rollover or advice on how to start a retirement plan for your business, you want to set up a program to save for your kid's college educations, you have received an inheritance or maybe you just want to get in on the latest IPO stock coming out of the Silicon Valley. That said, whatever prompted the appointment, it's not all about the money.

SWC brings music, religion to Laguna Seca

It's time for Spirit West Coast, the popular Christian Music Festival that will be held at the Laguna Seca Recreation Area near Monterey Aug. 1-3. This is the 16th year for the event, which typically draws crowds of 20,000 visitors over the three days of its performances, making it “the most successful Christian music event in the (southern) West Coast region.” Besides music by top artists in the field of Christian music, the festival features Bible teachings by gifted speakers and other activities for all ages - supported by more than 900 volunteers who donate their time to provide security, concessions, ministry, traffic control, ushering and many other services required to meet the needs of such a large crowd.

‘Oliver’: Heart-wrenching and sentimental

When Charles Dickens wrote “Oliver Twist,” a heart wrenching/sentimental story about the poor and the mistreatment of children in the early 1800s, I imagine the last thing on his mind was a musical about his hero's journey from orphan to finding his upper class family.

Vaccination can lessen severity of rattler bite

Q: Our neighbor told me that his dog has been vaccinated to protect against the poisonous venom of rattlesnakes. Is there really a vaccine for this?

Summer of doom: Murder in the microwave

It occurred to me that while everyone I know is off enjoying summer holiday vacations – cruises, climbing “Fourteeners” in Colorado, jetting off to Europe – I’m living vicariously through others and should probably use this time to do something noteworthy, such as write a novel. Because I’ve realized that, behold! Right here in my very own home await countless mysterious adventures.

The workings of our town’s clock

Hello, my name is John McKay and I would like to be your tour guide into what makes this community tick. How it works or maybe how it doesn’t, but I’ll mostly focus on what does work. Just like you I am a resident of Morgan Hill and maybe just like you I thought the mayor ran the city, apparently all by himself.

Pastor-style grilled pork tacos? Yes, please

Tacos. Everyone has a favorite style of taco, perhaps two or three. Some enjoy a simple crunchy-shelled fast food style. Others enjoy something traditional with a few ingredients. A few enjoy tacos with a little fusion of another culture’s culinary influence. One of my favorites - of which there are many - is a specific taqueria or street-style taco. It is the featured recipe this week, and with a little adaptation from how it is commonly made, is quite easy to replicate at home.

Death of a coffeemaker leads brain to strike up the band

My coffeemaker died the other day. Now before you tell me that it's no big deal, let me add this: My coffeemaker died on the same exact day I woke up with a headache from drinking port wine the night before. And when I say “headache,” what I really mean is an entire high school marching band had morphed into tiny little drummers and were playing very long solos inside my head.

Are you prepared for long-term care costs?

Like everyone else, you hope to remain physically and financially independent your entire life. And you may well achieve this goal. Nonetheless, the future is not ours to see, so you’ll want to prepare yourself for as many contingencies as possible – one of which is the high cost of long-term care.
