Summer of doom: Murder in the microwave
It occurred to me that while everyone I know is off enjoying summer holiday vacations – cruises, climbing “Fourteeners” in Colorado, jetting off to Europe – I’m living vicariously through others and should probably use this time to do something noteworthy, such as write a novel. Because I’ve realized that, behold! Right here in my very own home await countless mysterious adventures.
The workings of our town’s clock
Hello, my name is John McKay and I would like to be your tour guide into what makes this community tick. How it works or maybe how it doesn’t, but I’ll mostly focus on what does work. Just like you I am a resident of Morgan Hill and maybe just like you I thought the mayor ran the city, apparently all by himself.
Pastor-style grilled pork tacos? Yes, please
Tacos. Everyone has a favorite style of taco, perhaps two or three. Some enjoy a simple crunchy-shelled fast food style. Others enjoy something traditional with a few ingredients. A few enjoy tacos with a little fusion of another culture’s culinary influence. One of my favorites - of which there are many - is a specific taqueria or street-style taco. It is the featured recipe this week, and with a little adaptation from how it is commonly made, is quite easy to replicate at home.
Death of a coffeemaker leads brain to strike up the band
My coffeemaker died the other day. Now before you tell me that it's no big deal, let me add this: My coffeemaker died on the same exact day I woke up with a headache from drinking port wine the night before. And when I say “headache,” what I really mean is an entire high school marching band had morphed into tiny little drummers and were playing very long solos inside my head.
Are you prepared for long-term care costs?
Like everyone else, you hope to remain physically and financially independent your entire life. And you may well achieve this goal. Nonetheless, the future is not ours to see, so you’ll want to prepare yourself for as many contingencies as possible – one of which is the high cost of long-term care.
An explanation of ‘custom’ decorating
Kelly R., from San Martin, had a great question for this week's column. She asks, “What do you mean by ‘custom’ decorating?”
Residents walk for peaceful streets
There is no doubt that even our generally pleasant South Valley communities are impacted by the presence of juvenile gangs. Morgan Hill, Gilroy and Hollister all suffer from varying degrees of violence, intimidation and graffiti. Perhaps a strategy being used in a neighboring city could help alleviate this situation here.
‘Fiddler on the Roof’: Full of tradition
The audience at the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse received South Valley's Civic Theatre production of “Fiddler on the Roof” - the final production of the season - with well deserved kudos. If this is an example of what is coming next season, run – don't walk – to purchase next season’s tickets. This was an extremely well done show with an excellent cast. This wonderful piece of theatre is reincarnated with exuberance and energy, and is a joy to watch.
Sid saves the day after accident streak
There aren’t too many things that can make you feel worse than when you do something really, really stupid. Lately, I think I have captured first prize in the stupid competition. I can only hope that things come in groups of three and that I don’t have to worry for a while.
Witness justice grinding to a halt
Morgan Hill teen Sierra LaMar disappeared from our town on March 16, 2012. She was 15 at the time and a sophomore at Sobrato High School. Her alleged killer, Antolin Garcia Torres, 22, was arrested more than one year ago and he still has not entered a plea.
