A new era begins Monday for the Morgan Hill School Board as new Superintendent Alan Nishino attends his first regular board meeting, bringing some changes to the standard meeting agenda.

Items on the agenda include an introduction by Nishino of the district’s two new assistant superintendents, Michael Johnson and Stan Rose. Johnson will head the district’s Educational Services department, while Rose will lead the Human Resources department.

Pulled from the agenda is an item requested by a community member. The request from Robert Bennich asks for a discussion by board members of the possibility of changing district boundaries in Coyote Valley. Some community members have recommended the district seek development of a new Coyote Valley School District, cutting off the northern portion of MHSD, which extends to Bernal Road in south San Jose.

However, Bennich cannot attend Monday’s meeting, so the item will be pulled.

A board workshop is planned for Aug. 16 at 5pm in the District Office to review the proposed Coyote Valley Specific Plan with officials from San Jose.

Trustees will also consider on Monday approval of a $145,000 change order for construction of Sobrato High and will hear an update on the state’s adopted budget.

Nishino, who took the reins from former Superintendent Carolyn McKennan on July 1, requested a change to the format of the regular board meetings.

While the previous agenda format included a closed session meeting prior to the public session, the new format adds a public comment section prior to the closed session.

The new section will begin at 5pm and will be limited to 10 minutes. At 6pm, the public session will begin. The new format also calls for the adoption of the agenda and the approval of the consent calendar items with one motion.

Nishino has also moved the oral communications section, formerly public comment, to the beginning of the meeting, immediately following the adoption of the agenda.

Monday’s regular school board meeting will be held at 6pm in the District Office, 15600 Concord Circle. Details: 201-6000.
