My children and I recently combined households with a wonderful man, Mark Muhn, and his children here in Morgan Hill. We’ve been working hard these past four months to create a family where we work, play and learn together.

Dustin Muhn is a role model in our family and the community. He’s going to be a junior at Live Oak High School this upcoming school year. Dustin is an honor student, taking all advanced/college prep courses; he’s a leader on the football, rugby, and track teams, as well as, a polite, helpful, hardworking young man. Mark and I both feel very lucky to have Dustin as a role model for our younger children.

Scott spent the summer working with the Live Oak basketball team, while Nic and Dustin have been practicing with the Live Oak football team. There is great camaraderie amongst our boys. They enjoy playing for Live Oak and sharing stories about their teams. Additionally, Dustin provides the transportation to and from the boys’ practices. It will be necessary for Dustin to continue providing transportation for after school sports throughout the school year.

Unfortunately, Scott and Nic are both slated to be freshmen at Sobrato High School. This is very disconcerting to all of our children, as well as ourselves. As soon as we purchased our home and learned that we were in the Sobrato boundary, we put in for a choice placement for Live Oak. Scott and Nic are currently number 15 and 16 on the waiting list.

We have been told that Scott and Nic will probably have to begin the school year at Sobrato, and then may be allowed to transfer to Live Oak a month into the school year. This is extremely disruptive to the children educationally, socially, athletically and emotionally. Having students change classes and schools a month into the school year is not a sound educational practice, neither is splitting a family who has a strong desire to remain together.

Having our children at different high schools and on opposing athletic teams will undermine the unity we value so highly in our household. Our boys are very upset about the possibility that they will be playing against one another, rather then together. They have looked forward to attending the same school and playing sports together.

Please grant our children the choice placement at Live Oak High School at the beginning of the school term. We know this is the right decision educationally, socially, and emotionally for our children.
