Results from Saturday’s City Championships in Pony Baseball, featuring Mustang, Bronco, Pinto and Pony divisions.
Pinto Championship:
Twins 12, Nationals 2
Mustang Championship:
Giants 12, Tigers 1
The Giants were the National League Champion, winning their bracket as the No. 4 seed. They defeated the Tigers 12-1 on Saturday to clinch the City Championship in the Mustang Division. The Giants scored at least 10 runs in each of their games, including scoring 21 against the Cardinals to advance to the NL championship game.
The Tigers were the No. 5 seed in the American League bracket. After a tightly-played opening round – winning 8-7 against the Yankees in seven innings – the Tigers edged out the Twins twice to advance to the City Championship.
Bronco Championship:
Nationals 5, Yankees 4
The Nationals were the No. 6 seed in the playoffs and swept the bracket to a championship. They took the hard road to the title, having to face the Nos. 1-3 teams to the title game. After beating the Braves 14-8 to open the playoffs, the Nationals won the rest of their games by one run, edging out the No. 2 Pirates 4-3 and the No. 1 Athletics 4-3 before advancing to the championship game.
The Yankees were the No. 7 seed in the playoffs and responded to losing their second round game to the Pirates by beating the No. 4 seeded Cardinals. The Yankees then won their re-match against the Pirates, before knocking out the No. 1 seeded Athletics to advance to the championship game.
Pony Championship:
Athletics 20, Giants 3
The No. 1 seeded Athletics held serve the entire playoffs, winning all three of their games to clinch the title. The Giants won their opening game against the Jays before falling to the Athletics in round 2. The Giants rebounded from the loss to win their next game and force the rematch against the Athletics.
All Stars
With the seasons now complete, the All Star teams are set to kick off play later this month.
The Shetland All Stars began play on Tuesday, with Morgan Hill 3 falling to Blossom Valley 3, 15-7. BV3 will take on the winner of Morgan Hill 2 and Blossom Valley 2, who squared off Thursday.
Morgan Hill 1 faced Fremont on Wednesday.
Results of both games were not available by press time.
Meanwhile, Morgan Hill will host five tournaments between the end of June and the second week of July.
Morgan Hill will host the NorCal Central Region Pinto, Mustang 9, Mustang and Pony section tournaments along with the Pinto Super Region, which will feed to the World Series.
Morgan Hill is sending 17 teams in all: Three from Shetland, four from Pinto; two each from Mustang 9, Mustang, Bronco 11 and Bronco; and one team from Pony 13 and Pony.
Sections begin June 27-29 and will conclude by July 6. That feeds into Region the following week then Super Region, Zone and World Series, though some age divisions skip one or more of these rounds.
