When it comes to English Language Arts, most of Morgan Hill’s public high school students improved upon the scores on the California High School Exit Exam from the scores in 2010-11.

“We are very pleased that once again this year we have improved our CAHSEE results,” said Wes Smith, superintendent of Morgan Hill Unified School District. “While we remained flat in math scores, we went up two percentage points overall in English Language Arts to an 87 percent passing rate, which is the county average.”

Ann Sobrato High School, which rose from 87 to 89 percent passing scores in English Language Arts, did drop one percentage point in mathematics (87 to 86), while Live Oak High School, which jumped from 84 to 86 percent passing, remained steady at 81 percent passing scores in math.

Sobrato students were ahead of the county-wide and state-wide curve for math and English, while Live Oak students were slightly below in both instances.

“While we are not yet where we want to be, we are pleased with our progress and are headed in the right direction,” added Smith. “We are all proud of our students for their efforts, and our parents, teachers, and administrators for the ways that they support our kids.”

Referred to informally as the “CAHSEE,” the California High School Exit Exam is a mandatory graduation requirement for all public school students and is designed to ensure that all high school graduates have a solid foundation in math and language arts, based on state standards. High school students are required to take the CAHSEE for the first time in the 10th grade. Students that fail the exam in the 10th grade are given two more opportunities in the 11th grade and five more in the 12th grade to pass the exam. The class of 2006 was the first graduating class required to pass the exam.

The overall results do include sub-group performances for Special Education Students, English Learner (EL) Students, Reclassified Fluent-English Proficient (RFEP) Students, Economically Disadvantaged and Not Economically Disadvantages. Full breakdown of scores can be viewed on http://cahsee.cde.ca.gov/reports.asp. “We are also excited about our sub-group performance, because not only do we look at how our students do overall, we look at our sub-groups,” said  Smith. “Our English Language Learners had a 61 percent passing rate this year compared to 45 percent at the county level. Similarly, our socio-economically disadvantaged students went up nine percentage points in English Language Arts and 19 percentage points in math.”
