Jim LaMarche, the illustrator of the new book “The Sea of Sleep,” will read and sign books at 4 p.m. Wednesday. He has illustrated numerous books, including “Rainbabies,” “A Story for Bear,” and “Albert.” His work has earned him many honors and awards. The event takes place at BookSmart, 80 E. 2nd Street.

Candidate forum
Still cannot decide which candidate will have your vote for Morgan Hill City Council? To help make an informed decision, the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center is hosting a forum for prospective candidates. Everyone is invited to come and hear candidate’s views on issues that affect our city. The forum will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, at the Community and Cultural Center in the El Toro Room, 17000 Monterey Road.
Learn about publishing
This entertaining free workshop is designed to inform, empower and inspire aspiring authors. Join book editor Laurie Gibson at 7 p.m. Thursday for a discussion about the literature market, self-publishing and e-books. Track a manuscript through the traditional publication process and share practical ideas on selling one’s work. The talk takes place at the Morgan Hill Library, 660 W. Main Ave.

Get made up for the holidays
The Gavilan College Cosmetology Department Advisory Committee in partnership with the American Legion Gilroy Post No. 217 will present two very talented platform artists at the Holiday Hair and Makeup educational class at 7 p.m. Monday at the Veterans Memorial Building, 74 West Sixth St., Gilroy. Cherisse White will focus on the season’s releases on Up Do’s. The makeup portion of the evening will feature Lisa Cadiente from Faces Salon in Santa Cruz. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased at the Gavilan College Cosmetology Department.

Flower lovers meet
The Morgan Hill Flower Lover’s club will meet at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 3, at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center, 17000 Monterey Road. Marilyn Cameron will speak on her experiences growing Christmas trees.

Chamber taking nominations
The Morgan Hill is now accepting nominations for the 2011 Celebrate Morgan Hill Awards. Individuals, organizations or businesses may submit nominations.
Awards will be presented in the following categories: Man of the Year, Woman of the Year, Business of the Year, Educator of the Year, and Student of the Year. These awards are given annually in recognition of outstanding service, civic involvement and leadership in Morgan Hill.
2010 Award Winners were Lynn Liebschutz, Man of the Year; Teri Larice, Woman of the Year; Cherisse’s Hair Salon, Business of the Year; Ellen Yu Costa, Educator of the Year; Franchesca Kellett, Student of the Year; Morgan Hill Kiwanis Club, Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce Volunteers of the Year.
The 2011 Salute Morgan Hill will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011 at the Community and Cultural Center. Deadline to submit nominations is 5 p.m. Friday. Forms are available at the chamber, 17485 Monterey Road or online.
