The Home Composting Education Program for Santa Clara County is accepting applications for training to become a Master Composter Volunteer. In return for free instruction, materials and a Master’s Certificate in the Art and Science of Composting, graduates do public outreach events and workshops throughout Santa Clara County.
The Class of 2004 runs every Wednesday evening from 6:30-9 p.m. at the County Service Center in North San Jose, Jan. 7- March 10, 2004. There is also a series of weekend field trips to local composting facilities.
“This is a unique opportunity for people who are interested in gardening, recycling and the environment to make a difference,” said Ken Kelly, program coordinator. Nearly 35 percent of what county residents throw in the garbage or leave at the curb can easily be composted at home. Backyard and worm composting is a major element in each city’s efforts to meet state and local waste reduction goals, as well as guidance for our children to be better stewards of Planet Earth.
The class is limited to 35 adults, and sponsored by the cities of Santa Clara County. Application deadline is Jan. 1, 2004. Details: co*****@***********ca.us, www.ReduceWaste.org/ or 918-4640.
