Mary Jane Dedini Gonzales died May 2, 2005, at her daughter’s home. She was 95.
Mrs. Gonzales was born June 9, 1909, in Chennook, Mont. She had lived in Gilroy since 1919, where her family originated. Her father was Wentz Dorland and her mother was Ida Bastida.
She married Domingo Dedini in 1925, and they had four children: Dorothy, who died at 13 months, Evelyn, Katherine and Domingo Jr. They were married for 41 years when her husband died. After being a widow for 11 years, she married Phil Gonzales. They were married for 12 years when he died. Jane has 15 grandchildren, 14 great-grand-children and three great-great-grandchildren.
She has devoted her life to her family, her faith and her community including the Wheeler Hospital Auxiliary, Business and Professional Women’s Club, United Way Board from 1963-88, Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Year in 1966, Community Service in 1976, Good Egg Award in 1982, Hall of Fame in 1991 for community service, St. Joseph’s Center where she was in charge from 1975-85, member of St. Mary’s Church and Choir, served in C.L.A.S. gift shop for more than 30 years, named “Cow Bell” of the year in 1986 by Santa Clara County Cattle Women, volunteered at South Valley Hospital since it opened, donated six gallons of blood, was a member of C.L.A.S. since 1941 and was the treasurer for 26 years, and was a member of Gilroy Seniors where she served as treasurer for many years.
When she wasn’t volunteering, she worked for Wentz and Plaza Rexall Drug in Gilroy for 28 years. She was an avid San Francisco Giants fan, enjoyed gardening, word search puzzles and her family. She was one of the most dedicated, generous and nicest ladies one could ever met.
She was the mother of Dom Dedini of Los Gatos, Evelyn Codiga of Gilroy, and Katherine Codiga of Fish Camp; grandmother of Michael Codiga of Gilroy, Mark Codiga of Gilroy, Tim Codiga of Hollister, Linda Codiga of Gilroy, Paul Codiga of Gilroy, Teresa Codiga-Sanchez of Hollister, Robert Codiga of Campbell, Amber Baker of Arizona, James Dedini of Carmel, John Dedini of Kingsburg, April Dedini of Los Gatos, Patricia Cordich of Gilroy, Richard Codiga of Gilroy, and Debra Dupuis of Sacramento; sister of Margaret Borra of Los Gatos and Robert Dorland; and sister-in-law of Matilda Dorland of Oregon.
She was preceded in death by her first husband Domingo Dedini, second husband Phil Gonzales, brother, daughter Dorothy Dedini, grandson David Codiga, and sister Louise Sullivan.
Funeral Mass was May 5 at St. Mary’s Church. Burial was at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.
The family asks that any donations be made to St. Mary’s School or a favorite charity.
