Members of the Morgan Hill City Council should be focusing on bringing the economy to the city instead of using taxpayer dollars to move and build the library at a downtown location.

The present serene setting of the library is conducive to quiet study and learning as opposed to the busy and noisy proposed location on Depot Street.

When we are at the Farmer’s Market, my granddaughter and other small children hold their ears as the train passes. The present location is perfect for children from P.A. Walsh and St. Catherine schools to walk with their class for a library field trip. Building on the present location is sensible and feasible, allowing Morgan Hill to continue to be proud of the city offices and library location.

Why doesn’t the City Council focus on bringing stores such as Cost Plus, Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods to this proposed Depot Street location. Gilroy has Pier One. Why can’t Morgan Hill have Cost Plus? Redlands, a small town in Southern California, has converted former orange packing houses into antique stores and restaurants. A former train depot in Colorado Springs is now a popular restaurant. Antique stores and re-sale boutiques would fit nicely into the former Sunsweet Packing House.

Twenty years ago I remember Morgan Hill as a “destination.” With planning and promotion, you can make Morgan Hill a “destination” once again.
